This movie was just a time pass watch for me until it started out to be a brilliant interpretation of perceptions, emotions and the torment of a child who understands more than he should.
Louis Drax is a 9 year old boy who is prone to accidents. He has a loving mother and father. The movie starts with the boy falling over the cliff while on a picnic with his parents. He gets rescued only to go into coma. The reminder of the movie is about the revelation of what happened to him and would he ever wake up. The movie flashes back to his true relationship with his mother and father. How he interprets his parents marraige correctly. How he conveys that to his doctor.
The relationship of the boy with the mother is extremely overwhelming since it shows how kids crave love even in exchange for suffering and how parents can manipulate a child’s reality.
The movie starts with a preconceived notion about an abusive step dad and ends with the child wanting to be coma just to be with his dead father’s memory. It is just as heart breaking as it is eye opening as each layer gets peeled off around the kid and the true nature of the people around him is revealed. The doctor who helps the kid also falls prey to the conniving charms of Louis’ mother.
Aaron paul shines as the loving dad. Sarah gadon fits the bill as the actual abusive mother. And Jaime dornan is just there.
All in all. A good watch on a lazy weekday.
